| "We want to help men get across
the bridge-to restore that male component in a child's life, whether the
father is with the mother or not, to let the father know the
responsibility and impact that he has on a child's life. I see the
Brother Friend program growing and taking on other facets, impacting
other areas that men need to be aware of such as spirituality and
camaraderie. I see kids growing up with a whole different perspective of
what makes a man and what makes a woman." -Tchaka Muhammad |

Brother Friends
The Birthing Project recently introduced "Brother Friends," its male counterpart to the
Sister Friends. Brother Friends was created to support and mentor the father of the babies born into The Birthing Project. Expectant fathers are matched
with
Brother Friends who provide moral support, encouragement, information and guidance. Additionally,
Brother Friends will assist fathers in identifying and obtaining employment.
In addition to instilling a sense of responsibility and the desire to be involved in their children's lives,
Brother Friends help young fathers attain their educational and career goals, thus providing a clear vision for the future. "Our mission is to help them be able to help themselves and their children," says Larry Brooks, who does not yet have any children, but has four godchildren, five nephews and one niece. "I feel like I'm blessed in that respect. I do have an understanding and appreciation for what it takes to raise children."
While the basic goal of both the Brother Friend and Sister Friend programs are parallel, the approach to match or pairing the volunteers with the expectant parent are different. "Women tend to be more receptive to working with someone they don't know, and accepting help and guidance," offered Tchaka Muhammad. This is a totally new concept for men. Join
